After attaining enlightenment at Buddha-Gaya on the full moon of Visakha, the Lord Buddha was at peace with himself. It was not until two months later, at the Deer Park near Benares, that he delivered his first sermon to his first five disciples. This sermon brought into being the Buddhist religion.

It was on the full moon of Asalha, the eighth lunar month, that the Buddha delivered the first sermon to Kondanna, Vappa, Bhaddiya, Mahanama and Assaji. These five Brahmins had been in search of the highest wisdom. They accidentally met the Buddha and asked him to show them the way to enlightenment.
The Buddha delivered what is known as the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, or the Wheel of Dharma. The main theme involves the Four Noble Truths: suffering, the cause of suffering, the end of suffering, and the way to end suffering. These truths are universal truths.
In the First Truth, the Buddha explained that in any existence one is bound to suffer and be subject to change, which is the normal condition of life. You cannot be with your lover forever. One day a separation will happen as you grow older, become weaker and die.
The Second Truth covers the cause of suffering. Quite logically, the Buddha explained suffering in terms of cause and effect. Only through the destruction of the causes of existence will one be able to remove suffering.
The Third and the Fourth Truths show the way out from suffering. This will bring one to the state of perfect calm and bliss, a complete freedom from all forms of suffering. One can reach this level by following the Middle Way, which consists of right understanding, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness and right concentration. This is the ultimate way to complete happiness.
After listening to this unforgettable sermon, Kondanna was the first to attain enlightenment. Subsequently, the four other Brahmins also reached a new level of consciousness by listening to the wisdom of the Buddha.
The Order of Sangha was thus formed, hence completing the Triple Gem, which consists of the Buddha, his teaching, and the monks who further propagate the Buddha’s teaching.
Since then, Asalha Puja Day has become one of the most important days of celebration in the Buddhist religion. For on that day the Buddha delivered his first sermon, the Buddhist religion was formally established, and the Sangha came into being to complete the Triple Gem.
On this sacred day, Buddhists throughout Thailand go to their local temples to make merit and practise Dharma. They also donate basic necessities to the monks and listen to sermons to refresh their minds. At the end of the evening, they attend the wien thien ceremony, in which - while holding lotuses, joss-sticks and candles - they walk around the main temple building while praying along with the monks’ sermons. It is such a sacred day that it really helps purify one’s spirit after experiencing the full ceremony, leaving you with a peaceful heart.
The following day after Asalha Puja, Lent Commencement Day begins. Lent - or the rainy season retreat - is a monastic practice observed during the time of the Lord Buddha. In those days, there were not that many monks so they frequently moved from place to place to deliver the Buddha’s sermons.
But during the rainy season it was difficult for the monks to travel. It was also the time of year when farmers cultivated their land to grow crops. Fearing that the monks may trample farmers’ crops, the Buddha decreed they remained in one place.
For three months, monks could not leave their location once the rainy-season retreat had commenced. Only in matters of urgency were they allowed to venture out beyond their residence and, even then, they had to return before dawn.
This practice is still prevalent today. Most Thai men prefer to enter the monkhood at the start of lent to study Buddhism. It is a time of peace, with little disturbance from the outside world.

The Historical Background and the day's Meaning There are many important Buddhist holy days relating to the life of the Buddha. These days fall on the full moon day and eighth day of the waxing and waning moon. They are Visakha Puja Day (full moon day of the sixth lunar month), Asalha Puja Day (full moon day of the eighth lunar month), and Magha Puja Day (full moon day of the third lunar month). What is Magha Puja Day? When and where does this day take place? Magha Puja Day takes place on the full moon day of the third lunar month (around the full moon day of March). This day originally took place just two years after the Buddha attained Enlightenment. It occurred at the Bamboo Grove in rajagaha, a city in the Bihar state of India. King Bimbisara gave a monastery there to the Buddha and his disciples for their residence. This was the first Buddhist Temple in the ancient world. This holy day commemorates two important events in the life of the Buddha, the first of which occurred early in the buddha's missionary life. When the Buddha went to Rajagaha after the first rains retreat, at that time there were one thousand two hundred fifty enlightened disciples who had been ordained by him. They returned from their mission to pay homage to the Buddha. They assembled in the Veruvanaram Monastery in the Bamboo Grove. Two chief disciples of the Buddha, Venerable Sariputta and Venerable Moggallana, were also there. This assembly is called the Fourfold Assembly because there were four important characteristics about this assembly. The fourfold Assembly What is the meaning of the fourfold Assembly? The Fourfold Assembly was the assembly of monks where four coincidences happened at the monastery on the same day. They are the following: 1. All one thousand two hundred fifty monks had attained Enlightenment. 2.They were ordained by the Buddha himself. 3.They assembled on their own without being called together. 4. All these things happened on the full moon day of Magha Puja (full moon day of the third lunar month).The Basic principles of Buddhism The Buddha gave the basic principles of Buddhism to the assembly, where the one thousand two hundred fifty enlightened monks had assembled together. The Buddha took this opportunity to proclaim the foundation, or the basic principles, of the Buddhist teachings:

1. Not to do any bad deeds ("Sabbapapassa akaranam").

2. To do good deeds ("kusalassa upasampada").

3. To cleanse the mind of impurities ("sacittapariyodapanam").

These are the basic principles of Buddhism. These also were known as the Ovadapatimokkha (the fundamental principles of Buddhism). If all people from all walks of life were to follow these principles, human beings would have peaceful and happy lives. Our communities would be wonderful places in which to live. If we follow these principles, we can expect a peaceful family, a peaceful community, apeaceful nation, and a peaceful world. The doctrines considered next are very important for all to study and practice. They are known as keys for success given just three months before the Buddha's death. The Great Decision This first Magha puja Day happened in the early part of the Buddha's mission just two years after his Enlightenment. A second important event took place in the last year of the second part of the Buddha's life, on the full moon day of the third lunar month (March). The Buddha delivered a sermon called the "keys for success" (iddhipada dhamma). These keys are asfollows: 1. Good will, good intension, chanda 2. Effort, viriya 3. Thoughtfulness, citta 4. Investigation, vimangsa.Whatever we do, if we have good will, good intention; proper effort and patience; proper concentration; and investigation, or examination and testing, we will be successful in our daily work. As students, if we follow these principles, we will be successful in our studies. This is a scientific approach to life. Buddhism shows how people can develop into more perfect human beings through basic moral practice, mind training involving meditation, and wisdom training. This natural and scientific way of training and living promotes the real happiness and peace of all human beings and of all living beings in general. On the occasion of the "keys for success" sermon, the Buddha informed the Venerable Ananda, one of his main disciples, that he had decided to pass away on the full moon day of the sixth lunar month (May), three months later. This passing away was the Buddha's Parinibbana. These two important events, the Buddha's first sermon and his decision regarding his passing away, occurred on the full moon day of the magha month (late February,early March), at paval cetiya, in the city of Vesali in northeastern India. The Events of Magha Puja Day We pay homage to the three treasures of the Buddha, the Dhamma, and the Sangha on the full moon day of the Magha month, Magha Pjua Day. Buddhists all over the world observe this holy day. What do Buddhists do on this special day? One day before Magha Puja Day, people clean up their houses, villages, roads, and cities for the whole day for the purposes of better sanitationand a good environment. The next day in the morning, they offer food to the monks and perform many other meritorious deeds. In the afternoon they give food to the poor and to handicapped people. Then people go to the monastery to observe the Five or the Eight Precepts and to listen to Dhamma talks. In the evenings everyone participates in a candlelight ceremony. All assemble on the monastery grounds with flowers, incense sticks, and lighted candles in their hands. They walk completely around the ordination hall where the image of the Buddha is located, keeping their right sides towards the hall as a sign of respect. They do this three times in what is called the triple circumambulation. As they walk they remember the virtues of the Buddha, the Dhamma, and the Sangha, and pay respect to them. They also respectfully commemorate the Iddhipada dhamma sermon and the Parinibbana decision of Lord Buddha. Some of the people may spend the night in the temple for meditation practice. All Buddhists should pay respect to the Buddha, the Dhamma, and the sangha by following the said three principles of Buddhism in daily life.

BUDDHISM

The teachings of the Buddha have been summarized in three short but very powerful statements:
1. Avoid evil

2. Do good

3. Purify your mind

In order to accomplish these goals, here is some background that may prove helpful in understanding the Thai Theravada Buddhist way of life. The official national religion of Thailand is Theravada Buddhism and about ninety percent, if not more of the population are Buddhist. Buddhism, of course comes from its founder, Gautama Buddha (563-483 B.C), born in Nepal, which is north of India. Some academics believe that Buddhism was brought to Thailand during king Asoka's reign of the Maurya Empire in India (??-237 B.C) (King Asoka was responsible for much of the spread of Buddhism in Asia), by Indian merchants and emigrants and particularly by two monks, Phra Sona and Phra Uttra. Hinduism came as well and there is evidence of devotions to the Indian gods Vishnu and Shiva, such as those stone depictions at temples in Phiman and Lopburi. Mahayana Buddhism was introduced to Thailand around 700 AD, but reverted to Theravada Buddhism some 300 years later when it re-introduced through Burma.Theravada is the orthodox form of Buddhism based on Pali Scripture (Pali is to Buddhism as Latin is to Catholicism, it's sacred language). Mahayana is an enlargement of the original doctrine and bas

ed on the Sanskrit Scripture (the sacred Hindu language) but translated into Pali text. The following account gives some basic information about Buddhism and is taken, in part, from brochures published by the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

The Four Noble Truths

1. The Noble Truth of Suffering (dissatisfaction)

Our suffering is caused by birth (re-birth), disease, old age, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, despair, association with objects we dislike and separation from objects we love. Not to obtain what one desires causes suffering. There are many happy hours and pleasure in a person's lifetime but they are impermanent, lasting for a short time then vanishing into nothing, by the law of nature. In other words.... Please know that existence is but suffering caused by desire.
2. The Noble Truth o
f the Cause and Origins of Suffering
The three-fold cravings are: sensual craving, craving for existence and craving for wealth and power. There are also further six-fold cravings: the eye craves forms, the ear craves sounds, the nose craves smells, the tongue craves tastes, the body craves tangible objects and the mind craves dreams and/or mental objects. Understand that these cravings and ignorance of the law of nature are the conditions of the origin of individual sufferings.
3. The Noble Truth of the Cessation or Extinction of Suffering
The condition of the cessation of suffering is the complete fading away and extinction of these three-fold cravings. Forsaking them, giving them up, and the liberation and detachment from them. Please note that when the mind has given up all these three-fold and further six-fold cravings, the realizat
ion of the Extinction of Craving or Nibbana (or Nirvana in Sanskrit), is then possible. This is the ultimate desire of desires, meaning therefore, the end of all suffering or dukka.
4. The Noble Truth of the Path Leading to the Cessation of Suffering
This is the Noble Eight-fold Path, also called the Middle Path because it avoids the two extremes of sensual pleasure and self-mortification. These are:
1. Right Knowledge and understanding: intellectual grasp of the teachings of Buddhism (called Dhamma), the Four Noble Truths and the Law of Kamma (or Karma in sanskrit), (cause and effect).
2. Right Intention and thought: elimination of all ambitions, revenge, hatred, greed, lust and violence.
3. Right Speech: stamping out all lies and controlling words. Being courteous, truthful, letting no evil words esca
pe from the lips, being compassionate and full of sympathy, with a heart full of loving kindness and free from secret malice.
4. Right Action: meanin
g the avoidance of destruction of any living being, of taking what has not been given, indulging in sensuality, slander, intoxicating liquor or harmful drugs.
5. Right Livelihood: that is, pursuing a trade or occupation compatible with the precepts.
6. Right Effort: preventing new evil from entering one's mind, removing all evil already there. To develop such good in one's mind and maintaining all of the goodness that is there.
7. Right Attentiveness: also called mindfulness: this is the continual recollection of all phenomena about bodily structure, all parts of the human body, all states of health, all impurity and purity of mind, contemplation of various states of mind and all kinds of temperaments.
8. Right Concentratio
n: which is the threshold of Nibbana and consists of the four Great Efforts, namely, to avoid and overcome evil states of mind, to develop and to maintain a good state of mind. The purpose of attaining Right Concentration is to develop the eye of wisdom.There are three levels covering each Noble Truth. They are as follows:First comes saccanana, insights into what the Four Noble Truths are. Second is Kiccanana, Knowing what is to be done regarding each of the four Noble Truths. Third level is Katanana, which is insight into what has been perfectly done regarding The Four Noble Truths

Visakha Puja Day






VISAKHA BUCHA (Vesak) means the worship of the Buddha on the full moon day of the sixth lunar month. It usually falls in May. In the case of a year with an extra eighth lunar month--Adhikamasa (there are 13 full moons in that year)-- the Visakha Bucha Day falls on the full moon day of the seventh lunar month.

BIRTH-ENLIGHTENMENT-PASSING AWAY
The Vesak full moon day (The full moon day of Sixth lunar month)

Visakha Bucha Day is one of the most important days in Buddhism because of three important incidents in the life of The Buddha, i.e. the birth, the enlightenment and the passing away, miraculously fall on the same month and date, the Vesak full moon day. .So each year, Buddhists throughout the world gather together to perform the worship to recollect the wisdom, purity and compassion of the Buddha.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The Buddha was a king by birth. His clan name was Gotama. He was born in Sakya Kingdom, eighty years before the Buddhist Era (around 2625 year ago), at Lumbini Park (now called Rummindel, in Nepal, north of India), in Madhayama Pradesa, located between Kapilavastu, capital of the Sakya Kingdom and Devadaha, capital of the Koliya Kingdom, on Friday, the Vesak full moon day in the year of the dog.

Prince Siddhatha (the Buddha's personal name) was the son of King Suddhodana and Queen Sirimahamaya. On his birthday, Queen Sirimahamaya who was pregnant, wanted to pay a visit to Devadaha wich was her native country.

In the morning of the Vesak Full moon day, the Queen left Kapilavastu on a visit to Devadaha. Approaching a lovely park of Sals trees called Lumbini, located between the two capitals but nearer to Devadaha, the Queen wanted to visit the park and when she arrived at a Sal tree she started contractions and gave birth to a son there. When the Kings of Kapilavastu and Devadaha learned this, they were very happy and arranged a procession back to Kapilavastu.

Prince Siddhatta was brought up in the midst of luxury, led the happy life of a privileged youth and married at the age of 16 to Princess Yasodhara or Bimba who bore him a son, Rahula.

He discontened and took on the life of a wandering ascetic a the bank of the Anoma River. He was then 29.

He studied the mystic practices of the foremost Brahmin ascetics and realized that such practices were not the way to enlightenment. He went on his own way applying the reflective thought of conscious meditation to a rational simple life of moderation.

At the age of 35, he attained Enlightenment at Uruvelasenanigama subdistrict, Magadha State, (nowadays, located in the area of Buddha Kaya, Bihar State, India), on Wednesday, the Vesak Full moon day, the year of the cock, forty five years before the Buddhist Era.

The Dhamma discovered by the Buddha was Ariyasacca or the Four Noble Truths, namely:

The Noble Truth of Suffering
The Noble Truth of the Origin of Suffering
The Noble Truth of the Extinction of Suffering
The Noble Truth of the Path leading to the Extinction of Suffering

After having attained Enlightenment, the Buddha wandered from place to place teaching his discoveries to people who are accessible to instruction, helping large numbers of them achieve various levels of spiritual attainment. He sent his followers to spread Buddhism in capitals, cities and upcountry, until Buddhism was firmly established and widely spread.

The Buddha passed away on Tuesday, the Vesak full moon day in the year of the small snake under the two Sal trees in the Sala Grove of the Mallas in Kusinara, capital of the Malla State, (nowadays located in Kusinagara of Uttrarapradesa, India) at the age of eighty (around 2545 years ago).

The performance of the rituals on Visakha Bucha day had been continuously observed in Jambudavipa or India, the motherland of Buddhism, for a long time before Buddhism spread to Sri Lanka and Thailand. There, the Visakha worship has been continually observed to the present day.

In Thailand, Visakha Bucha observance began during the Sukhuthai period (around 700 years ago), because of the close religious relations between Thailand and Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan monks came to propagate Buddhism in Thailand and were highly respected. Thai monks also went to study in Sri Lanka. It's believed that, those monks introduced this ceremony to the King and people at that time.
